Tips on Changing Diapers

[I wrote this post a few months back when my 1.5 year old toddler was less than 1 year old – while cleaning up some files on my hard disk, i came across this – so, sharing it with you all]

Changing diapers is one of the most common, basic and frequent parenting task that one has to do. For a lot of obvious reasons, the onus (at least in the initial months) of that task falls on the dads – of course, once the initial euphoria fades out, the responsibility shifts back to the moms – but that is another topic :).

So,as a recent first-time parent, I put on my thinking cap and came up with a few tricks on how I could make the diaper change experience more fun for my infant daughter.

Here are some suggestions that you could try while changing diapers:
[Disclaimer – this may not work for your baby :)] :

(1). Keep a smile on your face – if you smile, the baby smiles back thinking that something fun is happening. This may be tough to do especially if you have to change heavily soiled diapers at 3 in the morning

(2). Sing a song while you change – this really helps to soothe the baby who is now oblivious to the fact that something is being changed underneath

(3). Whisper something in hushed tones – this keeps the baby engrossed and also helps to quieten a fussy baby

(4). Keep talking – about anything in general – what happened in the office, doctor’s clinic, how was the day etc – when you talk, the baby listens and hence, you can get your work done.

(5). If change of dress is needed, then play “where is ur hand” game while putting the new dress on – this is a favorite with my baby for sure.

Of course, all the above works if your baby is not sleepy or in general not in a fussy mood. In that case, all the above tricks will only irritate the baby more. In such a scenario, do the right thing – take out the old diaper, wipe and put on the new one – as quickly as you can. The tough part is that your baby would be crying when all that happens – but once done, normalcy should return.

I would be interested in knowing what other tricks other parents came up for diaper changes.

Salary Negotiation Tips

A couple of months ago, I blogged about some of my tips for finding a new job. Over the next days, I received quite a bit of feedback on it – one of the common feedback was about salary negotiation and how would one go about it. I don’t claim to be an expert in that area – but i can always help :).

I am attaching a Note about Salary Negotiations that I received during my B-school days and I have always found this to be useful – at least it definitely helps to act as a refresher before one starts talking about salary. I hope you also find this useful.

Zappos continues its fantastic customer service

A little over 2 years ago, i had experienced great customer service while buying my running shoes online from Zappos (read). I thought that this was a one-off thing and wouldn’t happen again. But I was wrong ! – i once again ordered a new pair of running shoes and here is what i got in my email inbox from Zappos Customer Service:

Whoa, Nellie! Have We Got A Surprise For You!

Hello Thyaga!

Although you originally ordered Standard Shipping, we’re upgrading the shipping time frame for your order. It will ship out today, so you’ll get it even faster than we originally promised! It’s kind of like we waved our magic wand!

Please note that this is being done at no additional cost to you. It’s our way of saying thanks for being our customer.

Do you think I would be productive if I had 6.5 hours a meeting out of an 8 hour day? – need to scrub my calendar and start afresh 🙂

Tutti Frutti Yogurt

Yesterday, we had been to the Valco Mall in Cupertino and we tried out a very interesting dessert –Tutti Frutti Yogurt. Here you basically select whatever flavors you want, mix it together and then add your own toppings – and you can do this all by yourself. Finally, you are charged by the weight of the bowl.

For example, we took Mango, Strawberry and Chocolate flavors and topped it with nuts, chocolate chips, strawberries and cranberries. The whole bowl cost us ~$3.00. It was delicious and most importantly, it was light because it was just yogurt.

If  you haven’t tried it out, then please do – its a thumbs up from me.
