India England series begins today

The India England series kicks off today with the 1st test match at Nagpur. Although India lost the Test series to Pakistan in Pakistan, they bounced back convincingly in the 1-dayers to win it 4-1. Also, they have a lot of fresh faces in the Test team – Sree Santh, VRV Singh, Suresh Raina along with the regular faces must be all waiting to make their mark. On the other hand, England have been beseiged with injury problems – Vaughan and Simon Jones have already gone back to England, Trescothik has withdrawn on personal reasons and both Pieterson and Collingwood have back problems. Captaincy Tips?

That leaves Flintoff with the not-so-envious task of leading the side for the first time, being the talismanic cricketer, one of their main bowlers and their ever dependent batsmen all in one. That is one huge task asking from him. But as Nasser Hussain pointed out, all this might actually work out in their favor and put the pressure back on India. What will happen – will the Indians fire, will Sachin blaze, will Harmison and co knock out the Indians etc – all these questions will soon be answered when the battle begins tonight.

Elevator Pitch Business Plan Contest

On Friday, I participated in an Elevator Pitch Business Plan contest at Santa Clara University. Basically, the idea is to pitch a Business Plan within 2 minutes i.e. the time it takes you to go from 1 floor to another in an elevator. You need to pitch your idea in front of a class-room of people and in front of some esteemed judges. After that you will be grilled for 5 minutes by the judges on the viability of the plan and what the future plans are for the business.

I pitched the idea of a Mobility Kiosk – Mobile Utility Kiosks for the Mobile User. Specificially, this will give the user (a). ability to recharge his mobile devices such as cell-phones, PDAs, handhelds etc and (b). ability to print photographs directly from the mobile devices. I feel that there is a huge potential for such a Kiosk, especially with the battery life being such a huge problem in the industry nowadays.

Anyway, there were around 20 teams that pitched in their business ideas. Some of them were cool, some I didn’t understand and some were not very well presented. All in all, it was a great learning experience – hopefully, this will help us in future someday :).

Future Stars of Cricket

Pakistan won the Under-19 World Cup recently with a thrilling win over India in the finals. That disappointment apart, this tournament has brought into prominence some of the promising stars of Indian cricket today such as Gaurav Dhiman, C.Pujara and Piyush Chawla. There is a nice article at CricInfo on the complete list of players from this World Cup who would go on to represent their countries soon.

UN Millennium Development Goals

As part of a course that I am taking in B-school, I got to know about the UN’s Millennium Development Goals to be implemented by 2015. Basically, in this course, we need to nominate a technology / innovation that can be applied to meeting a part of at least 1 of these goals. Pretty good stuff indeed – social entrepreneurship is an interesting concept!

For all the social entrepreneurial efforts going on in India, take a look at this – it is really interesting and amazing. If you know of any technology that you would want me to consider for my paper, do let me know.

Super Bowl 2006 commercials

Super Bowl is one of the major sporting events in USA. Millions of people watch it on Television. Naturally, companies spend millions of dollars to advertise on commercials during the Super Bowl. So, if you have missed this year’s Super Bowl and you are feeling sad that you couldn’t see the commercials, then you don’t need to worry anymore. Thanks to Google’s new Video service, you can view them invidually or all at once over the Internet. In fact, it contains some videos that were not aired on TV.

Technology is indeed amazing – it adds value to people’s lives is more ways than one.

Enjoy the commercials.
